I thought it might be nice for you to get to know me a bit better if we are to work together. Ok, here I go!
My journey into health and fitness began from an early age when I was enrolled into a tap dance class at the age of 9. From then on in I fell in love with dance and movement. I graduated with a First Class degree in Dance Theatre in 2013 and was awarded the Russell Maliphant Prize the same year. I then decided to deepen my understanding of movement and the human body by undertaking a masters in Sports & Health Science, graduating in 2015 from Exeter University.
All sounds super and pretty standard right? Well, actually my journey hasn't been so straight forward. I wish I were able to be a lot more active. But wait, you're a personal trainer and dancer right?! Yes, I am, but in 2006 I was diagnosed with Ehlers Danlos Syndrome and Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome, which dramatically reduces the amount of energy I have to spend doing the things I love so much (I like to refer to my energy as tokens). This can be quite frustrating to say the least. These conditions affect sufferers very differently and some people find any physical activity extremely challenging. I feel very lucky to be able to partake in exercise and dance. I believe that movement has greatly helped me maintain my health to a level that allows me to function (most of the time anyway).
I’m not one of these fitness practitioners who has magically cured myself. To be honest, my condition is chronic and incurable and I am not without my struggles. But, as I have mentioned I love movement and I truly believe it is better to learn and implement strategies that will help in maintaining functional movement, to help lead a full life. I am on my own health journey, wherein I am learning more and more each day about physiology and strategies to not only help me overcome my barriers but help others too.
I believe that my experiences with chronic health conditions enable me to empathise with clients who may be going through their own health journeys.
Every-body is unique and should be treated with care, consideration and confidence. Through person-centred functional exercise, we can all be ‘moving’ towards health.
